Indonesia Urges UN Powers Not to Block Palestine’s Bid with Veto
(MENAFN) Indonesian Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Arrmanatha Nasir on Monday called on United Nations Security Council members not to block Palestine’s bid for full UN membership with a veto.
“We…must ensure the momentum in realizing the two-state solution is maintained after the conference, including not to veto the full membership of the State of Palestine to the UN,” Nasir stated.
The five permanent members of the UN Security Council—China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States—each hold veto power that can unilaterally halt resolutions.
Nasir made his remarks during a high-level summit at UN headquarters in New York focused on achieving a two-state resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Emphasizing the need for equitable security, he called for an end to violence and the acknowledgment of both parties' rights to safety.
He stressed the importance of establishing “credible and equal security guarantees for both parties through the cessation of violence and recognition of equal rights to safety.”
The two-day event, hosted by France and Saudi Arabia and held within the UN General Assembly framework, aims to reinvigorate peace negotiations and accelerate progress on implementing a two-state framework.
Nasir also emphasized the need to strengthen the Palestinian Authority, asserting, “We need to empower the Palestinian Authority to independently manage security and fully assume responsibility in both Gaza and the West Bank, with the view of promoting the unification of all Palestinian authority under a single legitimate and Democratic national government.”
He extended gratitude to France for its recent recognition of Palestinian statehood, describing it as a bold diplomatic step. “When persuasion fails…only concrete action within one's own power and international law is needed to show the right path,” he said.
Concluding his statement, Nasir urged other global leaders to act decisively, stating, “Indonesia urges other countries and leaders to take this momentum towards our goal of a two-state solution by following the example of France.”
